Introduction to Youth Participation

Young people need a chance to develop. They also need the opportunity to have their voices heard and to make decisions for themselves. It is only by working in true partnership with young people, by listening to their opinions and concerns, that we can ensure that services meet their needs and that society can benefit from their contributions.

NCVYS provides support for organisations so that they can engage with young people on an equal basis and develop quality youth participation practices. This support comes in the form of:

  • the provision of opportunities for organisations to come together, share and learn from each other about what they have been doing in this area;

  • the development of projects that support and encourage good practice in youth participation: the Young Partners Award;

  • the provision of advice and guidance, through visits, written information and workshops;

  • the promotion of the role that voluntary youth organisations have in the participation of young people in public decision-making; and

  • aiming to walk the walk! NCVYS too is working to involve young people in all aspects of it decision-making and organisational planning and share the lessons that we learn with others along the way.
